What we do

The Floor Itself

What we carry, what it costs to live with, and which one belongs in your room.

In short

Deco Hardwood Floor supplies and installs solid hardwood, engineered hardwood and vinyl plank flooring for homeowners in Philadelphia and within 50 miles of it, bought direct from the distributor at the store price. This guide compares the materials, and the choice between a factory finish and a site finish. The useful order of decisions is the substrate first, then water, then whether anything has to match an existing floor, and only then taste. We bring samples and larger offcuts to the house.

Which flooring material belongs in your room?

Over a wood subfloor above grade, solid hardwood. Over concrete, below grade or over radiant heat, engineered hardwood. In rooms that get wet, vinyl plank. If the new floor has to match an existing one, the wood arrives bare and is finished on site.

How Deco Hardwood Floor helps you choose a material

The owner comes to the house, looks at what is under the room, and brings samples and larger offcuts. The material is bought direct from the distributor at the store price and quoted with the labor as one number.

  1. We start with the substrate

Wood subfloor or slab, above or below grade, radiant heat or not. That rules materials in or out before color or species comes up.
  2. We ask what has to match

If the new floor meets an existing one at a doorway, the existing floor decides the species, and it usually calls for a site finish.
  3. Samples are judged in your light

We bring samples and larger offcuts to the house. Stain and bevels read differently in your room than in a showroom, most of all in raking light.
  4. The specification is stated

On engineered wood that means the wear layer, not only the total thickness or the brand. Material and labor then land in one number.

Mistakes people make when buying flooring

Most flooring regrets are specification mistakes, not taste mistakes. The buyer chose by species, color or a word on the box, and missed the number or the condition that decides how the floor behaves once it is down.

  • Reading real wood as sandable

Engineered flooring is real wood on top, and that does not mean it can be sanded. Below about two millimeters of wear layer, it normally cannot.

  • Comparing total thickness

Two engineered boards of the same total thickness can have a thick wear layer or a thin veneer. Only the wood above the core counts.

  • Reading waterproof as a waterproof room

The vinyl plank survives water. The assembly does not stop it: water can travel under the planks and sit there. Find the source first.

  • Judging prefinished samples flat on

Factory boards carry a small bevel at each edge. It only shows with light raking across it, so look at the sample at a low angle.

  • Vinyl on the main floor by default

In this housing stock buyers expect wood on the main floor. Vinyl there can read as a downgrade, even when the product itself is good.

  • Picking species before the doorway

Matching new wood to an existing floor is easier within one species than across two. Where the two meet, the existing floor decides.

Why homeowners hire Deco Hardwood Floor

Deco Hardwood Floor is owner operated: the person who quotes flooring materials is the person responsible for it, and the material comes with the labor in one number.

  • Material and labor in one number

We buy the flooring direct from the distributor and pass the store price through, so you are not sourcing wood on your own between quotes.

  • Samples come to your house

Samples and larger offcuts come to you, so the color gets chosen in your own light instead of under a showroom lamp.

  • Stairs and railings built in house

Treads, risers, handrails and newel posts are drawn and built by our own crew. Most flooring crews subcontract stair work or decline it.

  • The owner quotes the job

The person who measures your floor is the person responsible for the work. There is no salesperson in between.

  • Measured before it is promised

Remaining thickness is measured at the edge of a board before we say a floor can be sanded, and no price is firm before we have seen the room.

  • Told straight, including the limits

Vacuum extraction catches most of the sanding dust and not all of it. We tell you that before the job instead of after.

Questions about flooring materials

Solid or engineered hardwood, which is better?

Neither is better in the abstract. Over a wood subfloor above grade, solid hardwood gives you more refinishes, four or five across its life. Over a concrete slab, below grade or over radiant heat, engineered hardwood is the correct answer, because its cross laid core stays flat where solid wood cups. The substrate decides, and Deco Hardwood Floor checks it before recommending either.

Is engineered hardwood cheaper than solid hardwood?

Not necessarily. An engineered floor with a thick wear layer from a good mill can cost more than commodity solid oak. The reason to choose engineered is where it can go, not what it costs. The reason to check the wear layer is that a thin veneer and a thick one are sold under the same name and have very different lives.

Is vinyl plank a good choice for the whole house?

For wet rooms and basements, yes. For the whole house, think first. Vinyl plank cannot be refinished and is replaced when it wears, and in this region most buyers expect wood on the main floor. Where a room is wet, below grade or hard on a floor in a way wood cannot answer, vinyl is the right material. Deco Hardwood Floor will tell you which situation you are in.

What moves the price of flooring material?

The construction and the specification move it more than the species name. On engineered wood the wear layer thickness and the mill change it, and a thick wear layer can cost more than commodity solid oak. Deco Hardwood Floor buys direct from the distributor at the store price and quotes the material with the labor as one number, after seeing the room.

Should I buy prefinished or site finished hardwood?

Site finished if the floor has to match one you already own, because old and new are sanded and coated together. Prefinished is reasonable when the whole floor is new and you want to walk on it the day the last board goes down. The permanent difference is the bevel at every prefinished board, which a site finished floor does not have.

Which flooring holds up to dogs and children?

It depends on the kind of damage. For spills on the surface, vinyl plank survives what wood does not. For dents and scratches, harder species such as white oak and hickory take more punishment than walnut or pine, and every species dents under enough weight. Wood can be sanded and repaired afterwards. Vinyl is replaced when its wear layer is gone.

Which wood species should I choose?

If the floor meets an existing one, match that. Red oak is the default in this region: it takes stain evenly and it is what most existing floors here already are. Where nothing has to match, hardness and the light in the room decide. Deco Hardwood Floor brings samples to the house, because two boards of one species can take the same stain differently.

Do I need to visit a showroom to choose flooring?

No. Deco Hardwood Floor brings samples and larger offcuts to the house, so you see the material in the room and the light it will live in. Stain color and the bevel of a prefinished board both read differently at home than in a showroom. The material is then bought direct from the distributor at the store price and quoted with the labor.

Which flooring can be refinished later?

Solid hardwood, four or five times across its life. Engineered hardwood sometimes once or twice and sometimes never, depending on the wear layer: above about three millimeters there is room for a light sanding, and below two there is not. Vinyl plank cannot be refinished at all and is replaced when worn. If keeping the floor for decades matters, compare this first.

What flooring is not right for a basement?

Solid hardwood, and laminate unless the basement stays dry. Concrete moves moisture from the ground into the room, and a solid board sitting in that cups and stays cupped. Laminate has a wood based core that swells when water sits on a seam. Engineered hardwood, after a slab moisture test, and vinyl plank are the two materials that belong below grade.
